Default Getting back into swimming help!

Hey guys, this is my first time posting on this forum, so I'll give a brief synopsis of myself.

I used to be an avid swimmer. I did all the bronze cross, star etc programs. I had also joined a competitive swimming team at my local community center. This was about 7-10 years ago, and as of recently have wanted to get back into it. Last school year is when I started, but I took a break once summer came, and now would like to get into it seriously.

I'm trying to swim as often as I can. I only started on Monday, but have swam every day except Thursday. I'm going to continue to try to swim at least once a day, and I'm wondering whether I should get a program or something of that nature going. ATM I'm just swimming 1km each time. 3x25m freestyle, and then 1x25m breastroke, rinse and repeat. I try to take as few rests as possible, usually just grabbing a drink of water at the 500m mark.

Now here are the questions. Should I be doing more then this? should i somehow include kicking or just arms, or other technique building skills? Should I be working on speed more then stamina, or stamina over speed? (ie do more than 1km, or start swimming faster, and probably do less). Should I take mini breaks in between instead of pushing myself? because sometimes when getting tired i do feel myself getting sloppy.

I probably have more questions, but thats everything I can think of right now. And other advice would be great, and after this post I'm probably going to poke around the forums in more detail.

thanks guys!
-Adam

Default getting back into swimming

Adam I think you should incorporate all that you mentioned into getting back into swimming. You should change your workout about every 2 to 4 weeks. So you should do endurance training for a 2 weeks then try some speed training for 2 weeks. Yes you should add in just arms and just kicking. There you can work on your form and the better your form the better your endurance and speed will be.
