Default HElp! dolphin kick :(

Ok so I'm on a swim team
and we're working on our fly's

and we often practice our butterfly kicks
on kickboards...

i often have no problem doing it face down in the water,
but when they have us lay on our backs, to do butterfly kicks( dolphin right? )
I just can't really do it

can someone help me out ?

describe the whole butterfly kick/dolphin kcik

have your legs togeteher... but I find that hard to do
kick from your waist..

When I do it, it dosn't feel right
it feels like im just bending my waist at an angle, not that worm like motion

thanks

Research "body undulation" or "undulation in swimming" or a similar term and look for videos on youtube for it as well.

The fly kick is an entire body movement that starts with your shoulders, then your hips, then your knees, and finally a quick whip of your ankles. The faster you can complete the series of movements and create a greater thrust with your ending whip the more powerful and efficient your fly kick will be.

Dolphin kicks with a kickboard is a lousy way to practice the kicks. Face down or face up, both positions are nothing like position you need to hold your body when you swim fly. The result is you are using a different set of muscles than the ones you need to build for fly. If you or your teammates start having back problems, let your coach know this might be the reason (this info comes from my son's orthopaedist--the head of sports med at the children's hospital in our city).

You're probably feeling it in your abdominal area because this is used as an ab exercise. You're going to feel the burn especially if it's a long set. I personally hate kicking on my back because I go NO WHERE. But it's great for the abs!

Am I understanding your post correctly? Practicing fly kick face up, or face down does nothing in your opinion, and could hinder the development of the overall stroke?

anyways
i find doing fly kick drills on my back really don't help me in any way, except get water up my nose, and feeling quite annoyed as I finish my warm up

it's so easy to do it with flippers though

You are most likely not doing the drill the right way if you are getting water up your nose...either too much knees in your kick, or your undulation isn't efficient enough. Do you have a video you could post?

Make sure you start from the shoulders. I used to have the same problem. With the shoulders, start with a slow, smooth movement like a worm would. It'll eventually get down to your hips which you need to do a quiker, yet still smooth movement with. That should progress you into your ankle movement- a quick snap.
